I read The Cape Doctor in two sittings, albeit long ones. It was one of those summer reads in which I let myself get lost. Levy’s prose is so poetic and thoughtful. I am a fan of historical fiction and appreciate the realistic descriptions of the characters and the storyline. The book was wholely believable and I felt an authenticity and connection with the era. However, the most fascinating appeal and success of the writing of this story is how the author gets “straight,” the descriptions of the subtle behaviors that make a man, a man, in the eyes of society, no matter the time period. It’s what some us of do understand and many don’t - the seemingly insignificant nuances which define or portray a man.It’s the small behaviors that sometimes make a man appear large. The author took care to address any questions in our minds about how Dr. Barry might have overcome certain obstacles in the navigation of his career and life.I thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend this fascinating, sometimes heartbreaking book. I think it would make a perfect period mini series! This story is based on a real person in England and Southern Cape. This female who lived as a male would have been accepted in overpopulated, grossly polluted London with more uneducated and disenfranchised residents. Europe at the time were separated in classes. The educated moved from one English Colony to another, without little regard to their beliefs or lifestyles. Having families in every port was common. Having found companionship and love with a man who benefitted from the sterling lifestyle of a female doctor ( dressed as a man) seems not only plausible but reasonable. The author gave the main character a voice while vividly describing the sensory intake at the time. I hope to see this as a mini series because the author's descriptions were worthy of seeing the world for the first time. This story is full of novel experiences.
