I am utterly surprised at all of the positive reviews for this book. I am a self-declared romance-aholic (not a word, but whatever). I will read anything, written by anyone. But I could barely finish this book because it annoyed me at every page. I have never, and I do mean never, after reading 100s of romance novels, ever wanted to slap a hero or heroine in a book as much I did here.Libby, who is nearly 30, is completely irritating, in the sense that she feels the need to apologize, repeatedly, for things she said as an 18 YEAR OLD. She returns to her small, hometown, after things go awry for her in the Big City. She doesn't want to return home, but has no choice after losing her job, and subsequently, her fiancé.The premise of the book got me looped in: "girl returns home after 10+ years, and everyone is happy to see her except the man she left behind." However, there was something about the hero, Pete, that rubbed me wrong from the start, and he never recovered. He was downright nasty to Libby, holding a grudge so deep about the fact she called the town "insignificant" before she left and went to college. Oh no, not "insignificant"! Because I've read so many books, the conflict or issue upon which this novel rests was so ridiculous. Girl leaves home pregnant, and doesn't tell the father. That's an issue. Girl leaves home with boyfriend's brother. That's an issue. Girl leaves small-town USA, goes to Ivy League school because she wants to better herself. Not an issue. At least not one that the hero can spend the entire book making her feel terrible about. It wasn't until the final pages of the book, the Epilogue, where Pete actually says he loves her. Pete just came across as a total *sshole, and I couldn't like him. Libby made mistakes! But should all of us be held to the people we were when we were 18? I don't think so.The only reason this book didn't get one star from me is because I really can see that she has the gift of story-telling. Personally, I won't chance purchasing another book of hers, only to be have to throw my iPad across the room after every page. But I share this feedback in the hopes that it will help someone wavering with purchasing this book. The hero never acts, for any length of time, like he really cares for Libby. And that grated on me. Jenny Hale has done it again--written a great story about second chances at love with characters you really care about. At first glance, you think Libby is going to be one of those difficult to like city slickers who pop up in novels, TV shows and movies--you know the ones I mean--like Eva Gabor's character in Green Acres who is too glamorous for this little town--but we soon learn that first impressions aren't always correct. We learn that Libby grew up in White Stone (a town that reminds me a lot of the little town where I spent many childhood summers in Virginia) and that she is returning to her hometown rather reluctantly after losing her NYC job and fiancé.While Libby tries to get her life in order, she reencounters Pete, the hometown boy who broke her heart, and rediscovers what she loves about the town and the people there. She gets the chance to be herself--not the girl she has had to become in New York--and to right a few wrongs along the way.A lighthearted story that you'll zip through and wish were just a wee bit longer so you could stay in White Stone for an even longer visit. Two thumbs up, Jenny!
